How this speedometer works
Tap Start and allow location access when your browser asks. We then watch your GPS position continuously using the browser's Geolocation API. Where your device reports a GPS-derived speed directly (most Android phones do this), we show that. Where it doesn't — iOS Safari never populates this value — we calculate speed ourselves from how far you've moved between two GPS readings and how long that took.
Low-accuracy GPS fixes (for example, right after opening the page, or under heavy tree cover) are discarded rather than shown, and readings are smoothed slightly to reduce jitter. Read the full breakdown on our GPS speed accuracy page, or see what to do if your reading stays at zero.
Your location stays on your device

Frequently asked questions
- How does this speedometer measure my speed?
- It uses your browser's Geolocation API. When your device reports a GPS-derived speed directly, we use that. When it doesn't (notably on iOS Safari, which never reports it), we calculate speed ourselves from the distance between your last two GPS positions divided by the time between them.
- Why does the speed reading fluctuate?
- Consumer GPS has a typical accuracy of 3–10 meters, and that margin of error shows up more at low speeds and in areas with poor sky visibility (tunnels, tall buildings, dense tree cover). We smooth readings and discard low-accuracy fixes to reduce jitter, but some fluctuation is inherent to GPS.
- Is GPS speed as accurate as my car’s speedometer?

- Does this app store or send my location anywhere?
- No. Your coordinates are read by your browser and used only to calculate speed on your own device. Nothing is transmitted to a server, stored, or logged.
- Why do I need to grant location permission?
- The Geolocation API is the only way a website can read GPS data, and browsers require explicit permission before any site can access it — there’s no way around this step by design.
- Can I use this as a bike speedometer?
- Yes — it works for cycling, running, or any GPS-tracked movement, not just driving. Mount your phone where you can see the screen and keep the browser tab open while you ride.
